CHAPTER 14

A FATHER’S DREAD

Lamberton Clark stood by his window and watched the cold rain falling in sheets outside. Muddy puddles of water filled every crater and hole on his property. He sat down in his chair, placed his head in his hands, and blinked back the tears welling up in his eyes. Had he gone too far? Had he risked too much and endangered his family to win liberty? A courier had just brought verbal word of his son Berty’s capture. Each word struck his heart more painfully than the next. If he only knew where Berty was. If only he hadn’t let him go. And his twins . . . his boys who were still young lads were now volunteering for a dangerous mission. Why did they feel returning to the safety of their home would be cowardly? He knew the answer and he didn’t like it.

Lamberton wiped the tears from his face with his cold hand and the sleeve of his shirt. He pulled his Bible off the small circular table that flanked his chair and opened it, hoping some words would speak to him.

“But whoso hearkeneth unto me shall dwell safely, and shall be quiet from fear of evil.”

PROVERBS 1:33

Lamberton swallowed the large lump in his throat. His thoughts turned to his wife. She would be back soon from the neighbor’s home, when the rain stopped. How could he tell her? Should he tell her? Surely their sons needed her prayers. She had always been so committed to prayer. Their marriage had certainly benefitted from each and every one.

He’d have to find the words to tell her.

God, please help me.

Lamberton drew a long breath and forced himself to his feet. Near the fireplace was a small lead cannonball, about 20 pounds, which Lamberton had been using for exercise. He lifted it over his shoulder in a slow, circular motion. His shoulder had been getting stronger. Should he leave and go help Tallmadge find his son? The major had been anxious for his help for months as a secret courier for the Culper Spy Ring.

What was the right thing to do?

Lamberton prayed for his boys while he tried to piece together the events of the last year. Someone was giving away details, however small or large, about what he and the other spies had been doing. Last year, leaked information had gotten him shot. Did the same person blow the lid off Berty’s mission? Would it endanger his other sons?

Who was it? What was he to do? He’d have to discuss it all with Tallmadge again soon.

God, guide me, please. And be with Berty, John, and Ambrose. They need you.
